Summer Solstice!

Well, today is the Summer Solstice! One of my stupid calendars had it labelled as yesterday, so I felt very silly when I read all over the web, and some Pagan groups I am a member of, that it is today! Oops! Oh well, it does shift between the 20th and 23rd, depending on where the sun is…

We Wiccans call it Litha, modern-day Druids call it Alban Hefin… Whatever you call it, the days get shorter from here, though hotter days are usually on the cards! The sun will never be at its strongest until this time next year, and for Pagans, it is a time for celebrating life at its peak.

With Liev news rather quiet recently, I’m hoping he’s taking some time to relax. For this reason, I looked up some worldwide Solstice celebrations, and actually found one in New York! Every year, there is a Swedish Midsummer Festival in Battery Park, and this year it is being held on 24th June, which is this Friday! Liev, it could be fun!! Bet the kiddies would love it!!

Here’s an excerpt from the site –

On Friday, June 24, the annual Swedish Midsummer Festival will take place in Battery Park City on the southern tip of Manhattan. At this unique celebration, adults and children come together to picnick in the grass, decorate the midsummer pole, make flower wreaths, play traditional games and dance to authentic fiddle music.

Paul Dahlin and fiddlers from the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis, Barnklubben Elsa Rix, and the Swedish Folkdancers of New York will provide traditional music and folk dancing. Gunnar and Lena Iggendal, leaders of the Stockholm’s Spelmanslag, will also join the musicians this year. Master of ceremonies and dance caller is Ross Sutter, professional folk musician and Swedish heritage historian.

Food stands will offer delicacies from some of New York’s finest Swedish restaurants, including White Slab Palace, AQ Café and Smorgås Chef. Another confirmed restaurant is Gigino’s in Wagner Park.

The Swedish Midsummer Festival is presented by Battery Park City Parks Conservancy and co-hosted by the Consulate General of Sweden in New York. Sponsors include Ambassador and Mrs. Lyndon L. Olson Jr., SEB, Volvo Group North America, Handelsbanken and Investor AB.
